To facilitate and create a holistic learning environment and to create a life long learning society. To improve living standards of the non-literates, neo-literates and literates between age group of 15 to 35 through literacy programmes.

 

About Us

1. Directorate of Adult education was established in 1978 for execution and monitoring adult education programs.  Directorate of Adult Education was renamed as Directorate of Mass education in 1989. 

2. Directorate of Mass Education is acting as nodal agency for entire literacy programs of Karnataka state.  And closely monitor Zilla Saksharata Samitis.

 

Objective
  • To provide proper basic literacy to all non-literates of age group 15 to 35
  • To take up activities to help Neo-literates utilize, retain, upgrade their life skills through literacy.
  • Facilitate continuous education to all neo-literates.
  • Create a learning atmosphere and a lifelong learning society.

    Organization Structure

     

    Responsibilities
    Secretariat
      Minister of Primary and Secondary Education/Mass Education oversees department of Mass Education. Secretary of Primary and Secondary Education is sanctioning and approval authority for policy decisions, making structural planning and financial allocation and releases. Secretary is competent authority for corresponding with MHRD and other funding agencies behalf of govt. The Secretariat does not implement the literacy programs.

     

    Directorate of Mass Education

      Director is head of the Mass education and he/she is responsible for entire administration and implementation. Two Deputy directors & Four Assistant Directors are working with Director. The Karnataka State Literacy mission Authority implements the literacy programmes in the state. Directorate of Mass Education acts as the secretariat for KSLMA. The administration and the other expnses of DME and the DAEO’s at districts is born by the Govt. of Karnataka.
     


    District Adult Education Officers
      26 out of 29 revenue districts in the State have District Adult Education offices. And in new revenue districts District Adult Education offices are yet to be established. At the district level, the Zilla Saksharata Samiti (Registered district literacy committee) is responsible for implementing and monitoring the literacy programs.
